After Tooth Extraction

After tooth extraction, it’s important for a blood clot to form to stop the bleeding and begin the healing process. That’s why we ask you to bite on a gauze pad for 20 -30 minutes after the appointment. If active bleeding still persists, place another gauze pad and bite firmly for another 30 minutes. After Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling and root planing usually takes multiple appointments to complete. Most of the time, we treat one quarter or half of the mouth at one appointment. Most of the time, it is necessary to anesthetize the teeth and gums and therefore it is important to be cautious after treatment. Please avoid chewing food until feeling returns to avoid injury to the tongue, cheeks or lips. In addition, smoking should be avoided for at least 72 hours following these procedures.

After Root Canal Therapy

After root canal therapy it is normal to experience slight discomfort for a few days. Since the teeth will be anesthetized, the tongue, lips and roof of the mouth may be numb. Please refrain from eating and drinking until the numbness is completely worn off.

After Composite (White) Fillings

When an anesthetic has been used, your lips and tongue may be numb for several hours after the appointment. Avoid any chewing and hot beverages until the numbness has completely worn off. It is very easy to bite or burn your tongue or lips while you are numb. It is normal to experience some hot, cold, and pressure sensitivity after your appointment. Injection sites may also be sore. Ibuprofen (Motrin), Tylenol or aspirin (one tablet every three to four hours as needed for pain) work well to alleviate the tenderness. If pressure sensitivity persists beyond a few days or if the sensitivity to hot or cold increases, contact our office.

After Crown & Bridge Treatment

Crowns and bridges usually take two or three appointments to complete. In the first visit, the teeth are prepared and impressions of the mouth are taken. Temporary crowns or bridges are placed to protect the teeth while the custom restoration is being made. Since the teeth will be anesthetized, the tongue, lips and roof of the mouth may be numb. Please refrain from eating and drinking until the numbness is completely worn off.
